DARK THINGS

There are things in her head
things she's done and said,
things to be proud of, things she'll never forget
things that she hides
deep down inside
things that seem dark and strange.

These things exist
you'll never know when you look at her
just another woman
a bit different or the same as the others
by day she's jovial, she laughs and she talks
but by night, her, these things will stalk.

What are these things?
little things, big things.
things that make her
but, if you were to know
it could break her

She's not the only one
with deep dark secrets
everyone has them,
their personal nightmares

Nightmares suppressed
forgotten by dawn
fears forgotten
when a new day is born

But as the light recedes
and the sun has gone down
the nightmares return
and the shadows fall

What are these things?
I do not know
but, we all hold them
hiding, lurking in the dark corners of the heart

Innocent and unsuspecting
they catch you, off-guard
and your scream is muffled
in the dark corners of your heart.
